When we see an educated and independent career woman, we think, wow, how strong and accomplished she is; what we do not see is what brought her here, how her journey has been, what was her struggle, what pain did she hide behind her confident face. Today we feature one such woman who is an accomplished healthcare professional, a doctor by profession, and a mom of 3 adorable kids, but neither came easy to her, be her profession or motherhood.

I completed my medicine study in India, soon after that, I got married and came to the US. I was a homemaker for about 6 years, while I was working on my licensing exams. During this time, we delayed having kids because I wanted to focus on completing my licensing tests first. When we decided to have a family, I couldn’t get pregnant, it was an extremely difficult time for me. I was struggling to get a job and our wish to have a family was also unfulfilled. It was very isolating for me, because most people I knew have had babies by then and they had also started working. All my friends were busy raising their kids and working full time, they were on their way to “settle down” in life. That was a point in my life where I started feeling completely empty. It was a dark time for a couple of years, then I decided to go for infertility treatment and finally resorted to IVF. And as they say, if God is making you wait for something that means he is going to give you more than what you asked for. The day I found I was pregnant, was the same day I got selected for the residency. Both my wishes come true the same day, but nothing comes easy, I knew that the next few years are going to be extremely difficult, but I was ready for it. I had just started my training back again, when my twins were born, to add to the challenge, they were premature. It was extremely challenging for me to balance my work while taking care of newborn premature twins. My husband was always there, we were in it together. I did everything I needed to balance my work and my kids. When I needed more support, I hired help, I had several sleepless nights and several long days, but I kept going. Soon my premature twins were healthy toddlers and I was doing fine in my residency as well. This experience has been so fulfilling for me, we decided to have another baby soon after. Now, I am blessed with 3 beautiful children, all 3 of my kids were born while I was in training. I started working after my residency without taking any break. Was it challenging? Of course it was, but I was determined to not give up on dreams I waited and struggled for the longest time to come true, be it my career or being a mother.
